SP5500 Optimus®S Series Data Collector

As of January 14, 2020, Windows 7 is no longer supported by Windward Software or Microsoft. This document has been left for archival purposes.

Before installing, be sure to determine if this scanner was purchased with the computer system from IBC. IBC preloads all the necessary drivers for these data collectors on the point of sale terminal, and sets up the command line parameters in the System Five Setup Wizard.

If it did come from IBC, and you are unable to get the data collector functioning, please refer to Ivan's checklist here:

  • Is there any compatibility issue between the Optimus Software Suite and Windows 7?
  • Is the Optimus Software Suite compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2?
  • What does the error message: Unable to configure IR device mean?

Applies to

  • SP5500 OptimusS, SP5502 OptimusS, SP5512 OptimusS, SP5533 OptimusSBT, SP5535 OptimusSBT, SP5600 OptimusR, SP5602 OptimusR, SP5604 OptimusR, SP5608 OptimusR, SP5650 OptimusRW, SP5654 OptimusRW
  • Optimus Software Suite

Although the Optimus Software Suite does not have official support for Windows 7 nor for Windows 2008 Server R2, it has been tested on 32 bits and 64 bits editions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. However, some considerations must be taken into account.

  1. Install the “Optimus Software Suite” with administrator privileges.
  2. The first time are executed some applications of this suite they may ask for a missing OCX components. To avoid this issue, run the application with administrative privileges. To do this:
  3. Click with the right button the application icon (i.e. Optimizer)
  4. From the pop up menu, click on the option “Run as Administrator”
  5. From that moment the application/s will register the missing OCX component and will run without any problems.

USB driver

The USB driver is included in the Optimus Software Suite. The stand-alone version of this driver can be downloaded clicking here ftp://ftp.handheld.com/Solution%20Attachments/KB-000005555/CP210x_VCP_Win7.zip

Follow the next steps to install this version of the driver:

  1. Make sure that the USB cable is not connected to the PC
  2. Install the driver in the PC following the installation wizard.
  3. After installing the new driver, plug the USB cable in the PC. The driver will install and assign a new COM port which can be checked out using the Windows 7 device manager. This port can be recognized as “Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COM x)”

When the USB cable is connected, Windows 7 might not be able to recognize the driver. If this is the case, proceed as follows:

  1. Go to 'Start' > 'Settings' > 'System and security' > 'System' > 'Device Manager'
  2. In the “Device Manager” select the “Optimus WHQL Bridge Controller” or “Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COM x)” (when using the stand-alone version of the driver) and click on it with the right button.
  3. Click on 'Properties' > 'Driver' > 'Update driver' Browse to the the folder “USB Driver”. This folder is located in the “Optimus Software Suite” installation path. If the driver is properly installed a COM port number will be assigned. Use the Windows device manager to check out the port number assigned. Use this port to work with applications like “Data_Read” and “Optimizer”.
