Partial Approvals

Partial approvals were designed for Visa and M/C Gift cards, though they can occur on other transaction types. A partial approval occurs when attempting to authorized the full amount of the sale, however the gift card balance does not cover the entire amount. Instead of returning declined as would when normal transactions occur, the processor will return “Partial Approval” and return the remaining balance on the card.

When a partial approval occurs, the customer requires another payment method to finish the sale, or the clerk can remove items from the invoice to make it balance, or the payment and invoice can be voided. Note that voiding the gift card may not make the gift card funds available on the gift card until the next day, so this option should be avoided.
