Process for Updating System Five

1: First, before you ever make changes to your software, we recommend that you perform a backup of both your data files and your bin files first. At least that way, if anything goes wrong, you can always revert back to your backup so that you can be up and functioning again. To understand how to backup your data and what files are needed to be backed up, please check the following article: http://wiki.wws5.com/doku.php?id=faq:backup

To perform an update to System Five:

  • Make sure everyone is logged out of System Five on all terminals and that any other Windward applications such as windwardpos, polling or stand-alone are closed also.
  • Log into System Five on your server and choose the top menu item “Utilities” and then choose the FTP update option:

2: The system will automatically choose the fastest connection for the FTP update. Normally, passive FTP is enabled by default, but if you are experiencing issues connecting through firewalls, etc., un-check passive.

3: You will be prompted to enter in your e-mail address so that we can note who has updated. This information is useful in the sense that if there is a serious problem with a current version and we know who has downloaded it, we will be able to contact the said parties to both let them know and also inform them of a fix.

4: You will be prompted to choose which version you would like to update to. The current release version is 5.35.8.X and we would recommend that you update to this version unless instructed to do otherwise. We also recommend that users who are running versions of System Five prior to 5.35, upgrade to the 5.35 version. If you wish to update to the 5.41 release, first update to the latest version of 5.35 and once completed, re-run the ftp updater and choose the 5.41 version. Note, make sure you have adequate hard drive space available, follow the steps and back-up the software as directed during the update process. If you experience problems with the upgrade to 5.41, please contact technical support as there are files which are created in the conversion that should be removed from your data folder before restoring from backup.

Version information will be displayed to the user. The system will automatically choose the options which it feels needs to be updated. One can manually override the system by checking or un-checking the different update components.

5: As the update is being downloaded, the user is informed of the download progress via the status bar.

6: Also, note the update message. This contains information about the particular version and also some of the major enhancements that have been codes to this release.

7: Once the update is finished downloading, the user is prompted with a message to ensure that everyone is logged out of the system. Typically, we have the users logged put of the system before we begin the update process, but if download speeds are slow, then all users can continue to work in System Five until this point.

8: If the update completed successfully, the user will be notified with the following message:

9: Once completed, click the finish button and re-start System Five
