Troubleshooting Credit Card Scanning

Problem and Troubleshooting

Only credit card number scans

Problem Description

When the clerk scans the credit card on the point of sale, only the card number gets filled in. The Name and expiry are left blank.

Troubleshooting steps

Verify that the information you expect scans into notepad
  • Open Notepad
  • scan card into Notepad
  • scan should look like the line below:
%B8256014206296285^DOE JR/JOHN D^05161011111100821000000?;8256014206296285=051610111111821?[enter]
  • Please note that the [enter] text in the code above is actually just an new line character otherwize known as the enter key.
  • Click here for information about the format of the above card swipe scan.
  • Take a look for the scan, and if you can't see a the part for the name then it isn't being sent to the computer. Either the infomration doesn't exist on the card, or the scanner is not sending the information from that track.
  • At this point, please work with the provider of your hardware or hardware manufacturer to rectify the issue.
  • It is important to realize that except under special circumstances Windward Software does not sell hardware directly to our customers. We route our customers to Vendors like Great Lakes Electronic Distributing (GLED). http://www.wws5.com/gled.
  • It is also important to note that for many POS Devices the support for them is not provided by the hardware vendor, but by the manufacturer.
Is the "use keyboard wedge credit card scanner" question turned on?
  • For this setup the “use keyboard wedge credit card scanner” option should be on. If it is not, please put a check mark in the box.
  • IMPORTANT: make sure that you exit System Five and log back in for the change to refresh
  • When should this option not be turned on?: when they are not using a keyboard wedge scanner, nor a USB HID scanner. If it is on, and they are not using it, typing % causes a 2-3 second pause in the typing while our software waits for the rest of the card swipe.
Maybe your card does not have a track 1
  • If you are a mostly cash based business, or using gift cards or canadian debit we reccomend that you put a check mark in the box next to the “Allow cards without track 1 to swipe” option. This options will effect the scanning of cards that don't have information on track 1.
